What is included in the price (300 euros):

What is the weather like in Athens in September?
    Sunny, sunny and more sunny!
Athens is a wonderful city to visit throughout the year, but it can be particularly
pleasant in autumn (September to October). At this time of the year, the weather and climate
in Athens is fine and generally fresher than at the height of summer, with high temperatures.
Be sure to bring a good sunscreen and be careful to avoid getting sunburnt in this sunny city.
A jacket or sweater in the evenings is usually needed.
During your stay you can visit www.meteo.gr to check the weather forecast.

    The Prometheus myth!
When Prometheus transgressed the law of the ancient gods and stole fire for humankind, to teach them civilization and the arts, his punishment was typically brutal. Jupiter had the great Titan chained to the side of Mount Caucasus, where a vulture preyed daily on his liver, which was renewed as quickly as it was devoured.
We mere mortals do not possess livers with quite so vigorous a regenerative capacity, but the legend captures well the remarkable potential of the body to rebuild itself. Throughout our lives we sustain less gruesome injuries from which we recover spontaneously, often without realizing we were hurt. Wound healing involves the recruitment and proliferation of cells capable of restoring tissues and even organs to their original form and function. These cells must retain a collective memory of the complex developmental process by which the tissue was first constructed. Fortunately for Prometheus, whose name means forethought, his liver was well prepared for its daily renewal, since it is one of the most highly regenerative organs of the human body.
What determines the healing potential of an injured tissue? If Prometheus's vulture had chosen a different organ on which to dine — the heart, for instance — the hero might not have survived his ordeal.

    SCORP-Japan 5th Hiroshima Summer School

    ************************************************** ***************

Please join SCORP-Japan’s 5th Hiroshima Summer School (HSS). This is a unique opportunity to get fully acquainted and up to date on radiation effects.

Every year, students from all over the world join this popular program; last year, we had participants from Croatia, Germany, Indonesia, Egypt, Nepal, Portugal, The Netherlands, Turkey, Japan ( of course) and a host of others. This year, we hope you will join us!

    1. Background

Japan is the only country subjected to atomic bomb attacks. Even today, there are still a lot of hibakusha, survivors, who still suffer from the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb attacks. Their symptoms remain difficult to medically diagnose..

Currently, although about 3,500 atomic-bomb survivors live outside of Japan, the number of hibakusha continues to increase worldwide due to such factors as accidents in atomic power plants, nuclear testing and the recent war time use of depleted uranium shells.

    2. Programme

The 5th HSS aims will not only include lectures and seminars on the medical and social effects of a-bombs and how we should approach irradiated patients as future medical professionals but will also have extra sessions to increase our overall knowledge and understanding of this profound topic.

We will also conduct study tours to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (http://www.pcf.city.hiroshima.jp/top_e.html), Radiation Effect Research Fund (http://www.rerf.or.jp/index_e.html), a nursing home for a-bombs survivors and other places of interest. Of course, every evening we also have enough time to enjoy the city of Hiroshima. And, you can join a sightseeing for Miyajima as a post-HSS tour with small additional fee.

    3. Application

We start online registration on 16th May 2010.
(online registration deadline: 20th June 2010)

    Registration Fee: around 200 euro

This includes accommodation, full-board, lectures and the transportation fee during the programme.
We offer participants accommodation in Hotel Sunroute Hiroshima http://www.sunroute.jp/HotelInfoSVE
We will provide you a small financial contribution for transportation costs in Japan if you register by 8th June
For more information and an application form, please visit our website at http://homepage3.nifty.com/hiroshima-ss

    "My amaaaazing SCOPH Family!!!

OMG, time flies!!! It's almost a year that we saw each other in Ohrid and now another IFMSA year has almost passed! Unfortunately I couldn't be internationally active, but I am always reading the SCOPH lists with interest and of course I have to congratulate Knakita for keeping the orange spirit and doing a very good work as a SCOPH D!

Miss CJ, aaall the best for the upcoming GA!! I am sure SCOPHians will enjoy the best SCOPH Sessions ever!!

Well, for the ones though who may not make it to the AM, I would like to invite you to the Summer School that is being organized by the Medical Faculty of Cologne 5-14 August, in Davos, Switzerland. The really SCOPH Topic of the Summer School is...

    Climate Change and Health

... and with this heat wave that has hit Central Europe, it can be very popular!

The attendance fee is 350 €, incl. board and lodging. Attached you can find the announcement of the meeting and for more details please pay a visit in our website:

    http://openacademy-davos.ch/

I believe it a very interesting and didactic meeting to participate and I think that it's at least worth circulating it in your National Mailing Lists. As the organizing committee informed me there are only a few places left, so better hurry!!

The participation fee of the Summer School costs 350 Swiss Francs, ca. 270 €.

That's all for now! Keep SCOPH Rocking my friends and enjoy the AM!!!

    Dear fellow SCOPHians,

I'm gonna make you an offer you can't refuse. You all know about the GA being in Copenhagen from August 1 to 7, right? Well, if not - check out www.am2011denmark.com or our Facebook page www.facebook.com/am2011denmark.

Copenhagen School of Global Health arranges a host of high-level courses on global health, and this summer, you have the opportunity to join in and attend the amazing Summer School in Global Health Challenges. It’s a two-week full-time course from August 8 to 19, in the heart of Copenhagen.

The objective of the course is to introduce the participants to the effects of globalisation on health and health systems internationally as well as in Denmark. The course will touch upon topics such as development aid, economics, global actors and health policies, communicable and non-communicable diseases, migration, brain-drain, violent conflict, refugees, human rights, poverty, and access to health care. Classes will be a mix of lectures, case-studies and group work done by the students.

Anna Rasmussen, member of the AM2011 OC, is working with arranging this summer school. If you are going to apply - or if you consider applying - and want to present a project you’re working with nationally or internationally, she would love to hear from you. There will be an Opportunity Fair, where you’ll have 10 minutes to present your project. Anna's email address is anna.roe.rasmussen@gmail.

Visit the course website for more information on applying, participation fee, etc. at http://globalhealth.ku.dk/courses/details/ssghc/.

So, if you’re coming to Denmark this summer, this is one heck of a chance to have yourself an amazing postGA!

Remember, applications are due on May 15.

    Cheers,
    Ben
